In late winter 1980, Jeremy
Winkworth started work in the research laboratory at the Bryant
Mill. This was located in the Mill C building as shown in the
photo below. At
that time, Allied Paper was trying to find new coatings for
their paper. Dave Kirk was the Technical Director in
charge of the research group and Mike Shaw was the Senior
Scientist. There were half dozen people in the labs. We did
production-scale trials of new coatings on off-hours using the
Mill D paper machine. Jeremy took a number of photos of the mill to
send back to his parents in England. After two months at
the mill, he got a job offer from Upjohn at double the wage and left Allied Paper.
That turned out to be lucky as the research group were all laid
off within a year or two. Fifteen years later, Jeremy posted those
1980 photos onto an internet page he had created and this
website grew out of that first page.
